Ya know, I’m studying this movie for Ethics and we’re supposed to find a female character to apply Kohlberg to. There are only two female characters in the whole freakin’ movie, and the only one with any real screen time is Rachel Dawes. The problem with Rachel though, is that she’s on in the movie to provide context to other characters. She’s the love interest for Wayne, Dent, and to a lesser extent even Joker. What’s the first thing Joker says to her? “Well, hello beautiful.”
She’s just an object to be won and held hostage. She has no real depth to her character other then a tiny bit of wit in her banter with Harvey. We literally know nothing about her relationship with Harvey Dent, other then there is one. Maggie Gyllenhall does a great job playing her, and tries to do the best job she can with the material she has. She brings a depth to the character that obviously isn’t on the page.
It’s not like I’m suprised.
